A new Czech political group, the “Blob” party, is supposedly being created with the primary goal of pushing through the construction of the National Library as designed by the late Jan Kaplický. The Czech architect won an international tender for his design, which was nicknamed both “The Octopus” and “The Blob,” in 2007.

President Václav Klaus didn’t like the design, however, and promised to chain himself to the bulldozers if construction started. His yes-man, Prague mayor and famed mountaineer Pavel Bem, professed to like the design but then wouldn’t sell the National Library the necessary land, claiming various legal technicalities.
